Description
Wyvern builds and deploys cubesats to collect high-quality hyperspectral images of Earth, the first of which will launch in 2023. Wyvern accomplishes this through deployable optics and by orbiting closer to Earth than traditional satellites.
Hyperspectral is an incredible new technology that will compliment existing imaging technology and unlock insights for industries like forestry, agriculture and defence. You can read more about it in Hyperspectral Imaging in Earth Observation.
Since power is limited on satellites (just what small solar panels can glean) and conditions harsh (e.g. wild temperature differences from one side of the craft to the other) on-board computing hasn't been tried much. When successful, it will improve the amount and quality of data available for customers, which is an incredible value-add.
Going through the Y Combinator program helped the company to find early contracts and increase funding with letters of intent. There is no dedicated accelerator in Canada yet, and this slows the sector down. In the tech world there are hack-a-thons, incubators and accelerator programs, which all contribute to building an ecosystem where budding entrepreneurs and other talents gain crucial skills to eventually build world-class businesses. None of this exists in Canadian space… yet.

Satellites are the most profitable sector of Canadian space, but continues to be highly capital intensive. Recent startups spend a lot of time and energy arranging funding. Wyvern's success (in Canadian terms) is exceptional.
