Description

4pi Lab is a B2B company focused on detecting wildfires from space for the benefit of wildfire management and forestry agencies. Their first satellite will go into orbit in 2023. Ultimately, their constellation will consist of 16 high-performance satellites using non-thermal sensors to detect, geo-locate, and report very small wildfires in close to real time.

How small is "very small"? During the day their satellites can detect fires only 10 m in diameter, but at night that shrinks to 5m! This compares favourably with existing satellite technologies which only detect fires 150 m or more in size.

The constellation is able to scan the Earth's higher latitudes every 4 hours and lower latitudes every 6 hours. Such vigilance changes wildfire firefighting from containment to prevention.

One way to understand 4pi Lab is as a public good. According to Crunchbase, the company has raised $249.7K. The company predicts that a single satellite could result in a 30% reduction of destructive wildfires, which in Canada would amount to 170,000 hectares. The knock-on effects on financial resources, insurance claims, and public health should not be underestimated! For the cost of a single ad campaign, the benefits to Canada would be several orders of magnitude, in impressive ROI and a better life for any citizen in areas where fires are common!
