Hunter childcare centre's worm farm funds its new book library

Worm farming is such a straightforward business that even children can run one. Many schools and childcare facilities choose to use worm farms to teach science and ecology lessons.

Once such facility is the Imagine Early Learning and Childcare in Newcastle, Australia. The Newcastle Herald, a newspaper, reports that the children started a worm farm 2 years ago and feed it food scraps daily. The farm was successful. With some guidance from staff, the children started bottling and selling the excess castings.

Impressively, though the children are very young, they are allowed to decide about production and sales. Their natural curiosity and drive keep the program moving forward. In doing so, they are learning fundamental business lessons while very impressionable.

They keep prices low, \(1-\)2 per bottle, and sales are growing. So much so that the children could purchase books for their library from the profits. Not only can they learn valuable lessons about vermiculture and vermicomposting, but now they can expand their world through the written word.
