Description
StarSpec Technologies is a hardware manufacturing company that spun out of the University of Toronto. It specializes in everything required to plan a satellite project, manufacture, test, and operate it in space. From their headquarters in Cambridge, Ontario, they guide clients through every step of the process.
StarSpec produce three plug-and-play satellite modules: a space telescope, for Earth observation, and for space certification. They also produce a wide range of technologies to improve stratospheric balloons such as a rotator, a tracked parachute data recovery system, a telemetry API system, customized and multi-payload gondolas capable of up to 500 kg loads, and a precision gondola pointing technology. Their power system can be integrated into satellite or balloon craft.
The development of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (a.k.a. COTS) products are widely considered an important step in improving space economics. By building a standardized platform, clients benefit from tried and true technology and economies of scale. In addition to lowering costs, lowering barriers to entry makes balloon- and satellite-based activities available to a wider range of clients. By controlling the entire production chain from planning to operations, improvements made in any area cascade across the entire system.
