Worms

Last June I participated in a demonstration of composting. After the demonstration the young lady was kind enough to also show off the worms that she kept. For those who stayed behind, she provided a small box with some bedding and 1 tablespoon of worms. This equated to approximately five worms for me.

Over the next few months I slowly fed, bedded, and raised my worms. I estimate that I currently have between 40 and 80 worms. The ultimate goal is to keep the kitchen scraps from going into the garbage. I would love to be able to turn all of our kitchen scraps into what is known as worm castings. When castings are one of the most potent types of natural fertilizer available. They are significantly more effective than composting.

What's especially interesting is that the worms can be kept inside. Actually, in this part of the world it is a mandatory part of raising worms, because the temperatures go far below what the worms can tolerate. So while my coworkers and I were video conferencing this week and they were showing off their cats and dogs, I was able to offer to show off my worms. Oddly, nobody took me up on the offer!
